Donald Trump wants to steal the midterms, because odds are low Republicans will win anywhere but the Deep South if he doesn’t. Nothing about this a surprise or, for that matter, news. But shenanigans at the post office actually make it possible for the president to pull off a theft worse than any grift that may be expanding the family bank accounts.

The Supreme Court last month gave the Trump administration room to see what kind of rules it could come up with to mess with elections legally. It reasoned that because there was no injury yet, legal challenges were premature. Come to find out the injury has been in motion for a fair amount of time.

A post office whistleblower says the administration was already seeing what it could do to tinker with ballots before the Supremes weighed in and halted an order from a lower court. The whistleblower says the new computer system governing mailed ballots, already rolling out in mailrooms around the country, virtually guarantees chaos and the likely disenfranchisement of countless mail-in voters in crucial races across the nation.

Michigan’s election, as usual, can help decide both the balance of the nation’s governorships and control of Congress. More than a third of the state’s citizens vote by mail. Well, they better not this election, and that goes for any state or district that could swing the balance of power, like House races in California and Arizona, which are both high percentage mail-in ballot states.

Make no mistake about it, the Supreme Court is allowing the president to exercise all the Executive Branch muscle it can muster. That includes flexing in and around the postal service, the only place where the feds can definitively affect the outcome of a process that is supposed to be controlled by states.

Without the ability to prove that the new rules and computer system are designed to slow the delivery, processing or collection of votes, the government’s argument is certain to be that unintended collateral damage came from the new system — and that those consequences are not illegal or unconstitutional behavior. The folks in the robes who gave the presidency immunity for almost anything the occupant of the office does in an official capacity are not going to say or do much if hundreds of thousands of ballots end up in trash bins stamped “Invalid” or “Late.”

Forget canvassing and cold calling. Concerned citizens need to be jumping into their minivans – rented, if necessary – driving to any district with a high population of mail-in voters, and ferrying them regularly to the nearest drop box, preferably right before the regular pick-up time. If possible, and if close enough in proximity, those same drivers should cast their votes on Election Day and get back into their chariots and take to the polls any former mail-in voter who can stand comfortably for a while and wait in line at a polling station.

Absentee voting used to be all about soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. The nation’s big wars, going all the way back to Union soldiers in the 1860s, is why it became necessary to devise a manner by which one could vote when not at home on Election Day. But in a country addicted to convenience and instant gratification, we now have a pervasive voting mode that increases voter “turnout” without needing to change one’s schedule or routine. Unfortunately, that mode also makes it easy for Donald Trump to truly steal elections all over the country.

Residents of each of the 50 states do not have time to fight a legal battle that they will likely lose. The best counter to this deviousness is to pull out all the stops and physically go to the polls, without fear and with a whole lot of favor.
