With the increase in antisemitic attacks, including the recent murder of two young Israeli embassy diplomats in Washington, D.C. and the Molotov cocktail attacks on people marching for the release of Israeli hostages in Boulder, Colorado, many Jewish communities face a sense they are being targeted as representatives of a government that is not their own for the ongoing war in Gaza. Last week, I sat down with Rabbi Andy Gordon of Bolton Street Synagogue in Baltimore, Maryland, a reform congregation that is politically active in social justice issues. We talked about the need for a ceasefire, a two-state solution and the impact of a narrow definition of Zionism on the ongoing mistrust among the parties to the conflict.
